Congratulations to Terri Stevens at The Tractor Barn in Brookline, Missouri!!! Terri responded to the memo we sent out suggesting we blog about our members. And what a great way to kick this off and congratulate Terri on 25 years of (as she says) being "Large and In Charge"!!! Terri's business started in 1976 at a previous location and was a salvage yard. Then in 1983 it moved to the barn and continued to be strictly a salvage yard until 2004 when they started selling new Mahindra tractors and they became a Landpride dealer. Their area has changed a lot due to the selling of the farmer's land and houses being built on the land in 5 and 10 acre plots. The salvage business still plays a big role in their operation and is how they got started back in 1976. However, with the growing number of hobby farmers, the warranty and financing on new tractors is more appealling.
For those of you in Terri's area please stop by on Saturday and enjoy a party and some great sale prices. I know she would love to see you! Terri is not only the owner of The Tractor Barn but she is an integral part of the Association by serving as secretary on the Board of Directors for the past few years. Having members like Terri that are involved in YOUR Association makes this a great organization to be involved with.

Kim is often sending me articles to read that she finds on the internet. They are usually about motivation, ways to remain positive and how to become more organized! I think she is sending me a message! One particular website that she frequents is www.pickthebrain.com. They have a lot of very good articles that you should check out when you have time. The last one I read ws about "Positive Self Talk". It reminds us that negative thoughts are detrimental to our day to day well being...that we need to consciously think positive thoughts if we can. That thoughts can change the way we think. So we need to eliminate negative chatter in our brains and replace that chatter with positve affirmations. When a negative thought comes into your mind try to replace those thoughts with something positive...instead of I can't say I can. I know it's easier said than done, but it's something that I really need to work on. I need to remember all the good things that are in my life and keep those foremost in my thoughts.
On a positive note, I hope all of you have a wonderful weekend. And....tomorrow is your board president's happy birthday! Hey...Funky...now you're as old as me!

I'm honored to have the opportunity to let you know about one of your fellow NTPDA members and what is going on in their life. I recently received an email from Scott Schelling at Rock Valley Tractor Parts. He wanted to let us know that as of April 1, Gene & Dee Vander Giesen are RETIRED! They have sold their remaining stake in RVTP to Scott and are going to step into retirement. They will be volunteering at local missions, their church, and numerous other charities. Gene also has a few “farmer” friends that he will help out, and Dee will continue to do speaking engagements about their life after the tragedy of their daughter’s murder. They will also continue to help RVTP with a few shows, swap meets and auctions.
I remember visitng at RVTP many years ago for a training we were hosting. I happened to mention to Gene that I wanted to learn to weld and make funky art. Well, the next thing I know he loads me up in his truck and we start gathering items for my "someday welding experience"! Gene offered to host my first show at RVTP!!! Unfortunately, I must admit....I never learned to weld but I still have all of the found objects Gene gave me in case I ever get motivated!
I think that just says a little bit about what this Association is about. It's the friends we meet that share in our lives in not only a business arena but also a personal level as well. RVTP will he hosting an open house for Gene and Dee on Friday April 16, from 9 a.m. - 1 p.m. to celebrate the occasion.

Flakes were falling — or threatened — Friday from Texas to the Florida Panhandle and then up along the coasts of Georgia and South Carolina, bringing a rare white landscape to spots that haven’t seen snow in a decade or longer. The storm was crawling east out of Texas, where it left the Dallas area with more than a foot of snow, nearly 200 traffic accidents, thousands without power and hundreds of canceled flights.
American Airlines canceled about 240 flights Friday, mainly at its hub at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport, airline spokesman Steve Schlachter said. The snowfall made this the snowiest winter in the Dallas-Fort Worth area in 32 seasons.
As you can see from the information I found on the internet last week…we experienced some uncommon weather where I live so I was unable to join many of you at the National Farm Machinery Show. I missed seeing you and hope it was a positive venture for you and your company. I know most of you are use to the snow and cold and the problems it brings with it. But…in Texas…or in my area it’s pretty rare for us to get this kind of weather. So…I wasn’t able to fly out and I appreciate the support we received last week and the continued support we receive on a regular basis from our members.

But...you never know this time of year what's ahead of you in regards to the weather. I hope all of you that are heading that way have a safe trip and that your time spent in Louisville is a profitable and positive venture for you and your company. As we have done in the past...we will be hosting a dinner on Friday night at the Hilton Garden Inn - Louisville Airport. If you would like to attend please drop by our booth - #100/South Hall and let us know. We would love to have you join us and we would love to have you drop by our booth. Be safe and see you soon!

A big THANKS to all of you who attended, displayed, sponsored, presented and made the trade show a huge success. Kim and I are thrilled to be a part of such a great Association! There would be no trade show without your participation and we appreciate each and every one of you. Good feedback from some of you and we appreciate that as well. We had over 200 attendees and there was plenty of time to visit the booths and network with your fellow NTPDA members. We elected the new officers for 2010 and after attending the board meeting on Saturday morning I'm pleased to say that we have a great board this year and I think they will be involved and attentive to the needs of the Association. Watch your next Bulletin for highlights of the trade show.
Our next trade show is schedule for January 2011 in Orlando , Florida . We will start planning that event in the next few weeks. I've already been asked to put a golf tournament together for the attendees and also get information regarding Disney World. If any of you have any suggestions, please let me know as soon as possible. It takes about 18 months from start to finish to put a trade show together. I look forward to hearing from you.
I hope your year has started off on the right foot and I hope all of you much health and prosperity in the year 2010.

It is show time! This week we are off to Nashville for our 26th Annual Conference and Trade Show. The week will be filled with social events and networking with people in the industry of selling new, used and rebuilt agricultural and industrial repair parts. We all look forward to seeing each other at this time of year and reuniting. It is a time to see familiar faces as well as meet new members who are new to the Association. It is a time to visit exhibitors who attend our show and display their products. It is a time to get to know others in the Association on a different level. This will be my 9th trade show to attend and I can tell you this group has become a family to me. I talk to members throughout the year but it is in January that I look forward to seeing those who get to attend face to face. We have members who have been with us since the conception of the Association to those who have just joined. We are a diverse group in age but all who are in the business of selling agricultural and/or industrial repair parts. If you are reading this and are a member attending the show, I will see you in a few days. If you are a member but not attending the show this year, you will be missed! I hope you will consider joining us in Orlando next year. If you are reading this and you sell new, used or rebuilt ag or industrial repair parts, drop me a line at kim@ntpda.com and I’ll send you information how you can become a part of this amazing group of people.

The NTPDA office has been busy putting the finishing touches on the registrations for our upcoming conference and trade show. If you've provided us with an email address, you received the registrations via email. If not you can go to www.ntpda.com and download them or you can find them in the 3rd quarter issue of the Bulletin. This has worked really well for the office and we hope it's worked well for all of you. Our displayers and attendees are signing up. We're also hearing from a lot of you that want to Host/Sponsor this event. The Host/Sponsor money is more important than ever during this recession. Because of the recession we are keeping a close eye on our budget and are having to make a few changes in regard to the conference and trade show. But...not to worry...we have great speakers lined up for you as well as some great events. From going to see the Grand Ole Opry at the Ryman Auditorium to taking the Nash Trash tour and lots of networking time - everyone will have a great time.
Look forward to more information regarding our conference and trade show. If you haven't filled out your registration forms, please do so...the deadline is October 31st!

For those of you who didn't see the comment from Jackie Dantzler with All American Crankshaft Co. regarding my latest blog here it is...
You are so right, Phyllis. I have seen mothers turn in their seats while driving down the road to speak to, correct, argue, feed, etc. a child. So if that driver isn't paying attention and then the driver behind or coming up on them isn't paying attention the potential for horrific accidents just tripled. What is more important than the safety of the ones we love? Should be nothing...no CD, song on the radio, phone call, text message, GPS device. And when I say protecting our loved ones that includes what it would do to them if we were killed doing something ridiculous (real dangerous) in a vehicle. More to our industry.....many more serious engine failures could be lessen or reduced if the operator of that backhoe, motorgrader, tractor did not have the music in the cab so loud that he did not hear the engine sputter, ping, rattle, or begin to knock before a rod came out the side. Just my two cents worth today. Be safe out there. Jackie
Jackie's comment brought my thoughts around to how you as a member can play it safe in your businesses. And...it prompted me to ask Jackie to "Be My Guest" and write a blog for us. So...I'm extending this invitation to all of you. We've already been educated by Eric Benton with Southeast Tractor Parts who wrote a blog for us. So, if you are interested just drop me an email and we'll get you set up as well.
Hope you are having a great week. And...ditto what Jackie said, "Be safe out there!"

This morning I was up early walking my dog downtown. It's always interesting to just look around at people, buildings...sites in general. But sometimes things happen that make you stop and think. As I was walking I heard a siren...wasn't sure if it was the police or an ambulance or a fire truck so I stopped and watched where the sound was coming from. I saw the police car speed toward the intersection and then he had to brake for a car coming across the intersection paying no attention to the siren....the police had to brake for the other car. People are just not paying attention anymore and I blame it on cell phones and texting while driving as well as everyone just being caught up in their own world. I admit I'm guilty of talking on the phone while I'm driving....and I've texted while driving. But...after the online video about what can happen to you while texting I've cut that out of my life. Are you playing it safe when you drive...are you watching out for the other guy...are you talking on your phone with a hands free device and are you NOT texting? Just some thoughts because I want all of you to be safe.
I hope all of you had a great weekend and as you know it's almost time to get those conference and trade show registrations out to you. I can't believe trade show time is right around the corner. This year we are going to provide you with the forms in two ways - on our website...just print them out and fax/mail them in....or use the registration forms that will be provided in the next issue of the Bulletin. Watch your emails for more information.

Has the summer flown by for all of you as fast as it has for me? Seems like just a few weeks ago we were enjoying the nice weather in Texas at our conference and trade show. But, that's been about 8 months ago and we are working fast and furious getting ready for our 26th annual conference and trade show in Nashville. And I hope you've marked your calendars for January 13-17, 2010. We've got another great show planned for all of you. It's a great time for everyone within the association to get together to socialize and network with one another. So...we hope to see you there! We have some great speakers lined up along with a returning keynote speaker - Karen McCullough. In the next issue of the Bulletin we will include the Program at a Glance and information regarding the speakers, the spouse program and our Saturday night planned activities. You won't want to miss this opportunity to visit with your fellow members involved in the tractor parts industry. See you there!

As you know, we recently held our Summer Conference and we had a great time and enjoyed the social and business opportunities it afforded us all. We all met in New Orleans and then cruised out of there to Cozumel. It was a quick trip but it was a great time. On the cruise I ran into a guy that went by the name of Skinny. He was always pleasant, funny, friendly and we talked several times during the course of the cruise. Seems that almost everywhere I went I saw him. Maybe he was in the gift shop buying candy, or in line at the buffet getting his breakfast, or waiting for the elevator after a day on shore. Whenever I saw him he spoke to me and we exchanged pleasantries. I found out he was from Arkansas (no, I didn't hold that against him because I'm from Arkansas, too) and he had dabbled in several business but most of his life he had been an auctioneer. One morning I was sitting with Skinny and Carl Vande Weerd joined us and we were chatting. He said, matter of factly, "I wake up every day in a really great mood. I'm happy and ready for my day....if it just wasn't for this MS!" You see, every time I saw Skinny he was on his motorized wheelchair or moving from the wheelchair to a chair with the use of a cane. He was probably 50 years old and he had this debilitating disease...but that didn't deter him from being upbeat, friendly and ready to face each day. Can we say that about the way we start our day or think about our lives? I admit that I don't always do that...but after meeting Skinny....I'm going to sure try. I'm sure he surrounds himself with very positive, friendly people and that made me think about the fact that that is what this Association is all about. The Association consists of friendly and positive members that are ready to help their fellow member at any time. We strive as individuals and members of the Association to be the best we can be. It seems like Skinny has done that. Hopefully we can too.

Every day we deal with customer service in one way or another. We are either on the receiving end or the giving end. I want to talk about the receiving end. And, I'm wondering what has happened to customer service in many places. I recently went to a very nice restaurant, sat at the bar, ordered a drink and visited with friends. Now, if you're sitting at the bar I would expect the bartender/waiter to ask you if you want a refill, water or maybe a menu. But, on this particular occasion I had to ask for those things and I felt like I was "bothering" the server. That's not how you're suppose to feel. I'm not sure what some of these people are doing working in a field where customer service is their number one priority. Then, on the other hand, I can pull into my local Sonic and order a drink during "Happy Hour" and receive the best customer service available. The girls are friendly, seem happy to be at their jobs and make you want to come back. I think that's what customer service is all about. Making the customer feel like you appreciate their business or simply appreciate that they stopped by even if they didn't purchase anything at that time. They will remember how they were treated and that will ensure that they return and hopefully purchase something next time. In your business...how do you think your customer service is rated...just something to think about.

Is this a great Association or what? I just think that occasionally I should talk about what an asset it is to be a member of the National Tractor Parts Dealer Association. Example...last week we got word from Carl Vande Weerd with Worthington Ag Parts that a possible scam was taking place with an unidentified person using an NTPDA member's email as reference to gain access to information and parts from other NTPDA members. And, as part of our responsibility to all of our members we sent an email out to everyone warning them. There was feedback from other members thanking Carl and the Association for letting them know.
As an Association we want to offer our services to our members in whatever capacity we can. So, we thank Carl for letting us know and thank Kim for getting the email out promptly to all of our members!

I'm not sure how I'm going to relate my thoughts today to the tractor parts industry...but I'll try. If I don't...then know this is just me talking to you!
I'm a little behind the times and just purchased my Wii. If you don't know what it is...it might be better if you leave it that way. It's an interactive "toy" that you hook up to your TV and you can play games. Last night I went bowling, played a few rounds of tennis, hit a few golf balls and made at least one homerun! I was busy! Then...I had to spoil it by taking the Wii Fitness Test...let's see how old you REALLY are! Well...if my true age was what Wii Fit said was my age then I would already be laying back enjoying my retirement. Or maybe I should say I would be retirement age but maybe not enjoying my retirement! Depends on how much money I had been able to save and how the economy was doing. But that's another story.
Anyway...maybe we can relate it to our businesses by asking if your company is on track by its "true age". Are you up to date with technology? Do you have a website? Are you blogging on your website (How was that ML?) Do you have all the tools that allow you to keep up with the times? I can't answer those questions for you...it's just something to think about.
Now...I think I'll go turn on my Wii and check my "true age" again and see if I've improved overnight!

When your tractor is broken and the OEM parts person has shocked you beyond belief, try an alternative! Call a used parts dealer. One of the used parts dealers in the National Tractor Parts Dealer Association network probably has what you need to fix your tractor. The best part about a good used tractor part is it will cost about half the cost of a new part. You as a farmer, are in a business where you have very little control over your input costs and you have very little control over what you are paid for your crops. Therefore, a great deal of your profit depends on you being able to buy your inputs at a deal. I see farmers putting in 10,000 gallon fuel tanks to be able to save .30 cents per gallon fuel. I see farmers combining their fertilizer & chemical purchases to buy bulk and buy cheaper. I also see more and more farmers buying used parts to fix their tractor or combine. They have been to the OEM dealer and have been priced $2200 for a bare final drive and bought a used one for $1000. They have been to the OEM dealer and have been priced $375 for a spindle and bought a used one for $175. This is your profit.
Used parts dealers have engines, transmissions, axles, radiators, spindles, wheels, cabs and lots of other parts. It doesn’t matter what kind of tractor you have there is probably one of us selling parts for it.

Kim and I attended the National Farm Machinery Show last week in Louisville. In spite of the economy it seemed to be a great show with record attendance. We use the time to promote our regular members by passing out a flyer that lists all the regular members and their contact information. I asked one gentleman if he ever needed tractor parts, and he said "No, never!" - with a smile. So, I'm sure that he along with many of the other attendees will use the information we provided them to contact you for a new, used or rebuilt tractor part. We handed out over 1000 brochures and 1000 calendars so we feel like it was a huge success. We also have about 18 member companies that display at the show and there are other members that attend the show to look around and see what's new! It was great seeing you and hope the time you spent in Louisville was worthwhile.

It's a new week and I'm sure there is a lot on your "To Do" list. And, most of you can't check things off that list unless you have people to help you. I guess I started thinking about this yesterday during the Super Bowl. And, whether or not your team won you know that there are a lot of elements involved in playing the game. And, the one word that came to mind was TEAMWORK! Even though the National Tractor Parts Dealer Association is a relatively small association - Kim and I work as a team. I couldn't do what I do without her help, inspiration and support - and visa versa! We both have our strengths....and, yes, our weaknesses...but together we can accomplish the goals we set out to do on a weekly, monthly and yearly basis. I hope that you have that kind of team at your businesses, that you have a great month and you accomplish the goals you set out for. . . not only your business but also your personal goals!

Many of us that are a part of the National Tractor Parts Dealer Association recently returned from our 25th Annual Conference and Trade Show. As "keeper of the trade show" I think that it went very well and that many of our attendees went away with new thoughts and ideas that will help their businesses. It was suggested from one of the attendees that at our next trade show we have more speakers that can directly address issues that pertain to our Association, ie., the IRS and the EPA. The NTPDA office will begin doing research on this in the very near future and always welcome your input.
I'm not sure how many of our attendees or members read the blog but I do want to thank everyone that attended, displayed and sponsored an event. Some of you did all of those things and however you contributed to our 25th Annual Conference and Trade Show your attendance and participation is what makes it successful.
As you know, we are always looking for ways to help each of you and I would welcome any feedback or suggestions you might have.

Okay...there's only three shopping days until Christmas. So, if you haven't gotten that special someone a Christmas present you might want to start thinking about it! But, it's not all about what you give or what you receive - it's about spending time with family and friends. I wish all of you Happy Holidays and a very Happy and Prosperous New Year.
And...now it's time for all of those New Year's resolutions. Lose weight, eat healthier, exercise, curb those bad habits, be more positive...wait I think those are MY New Year's resolutions?? Anyway, there's always room for improvement in our lives - personally and professionally. My New Year's resolution as it relates to the National Tractor Parts Dealer Association (NTPDA) is to blog on a more consistent level and to increase our membership! So... every Wednesday I will be blogging. I'm not exactly sure what the topics will be so stay tuned! I do know that my purpose will be to promote the Association and educate others about our Association and what we have to offer potential members and the end user. I'll also blog about our fellow members, what's going on in the world...just general thoughts as it relates to all of us.
Kim and I are looking forward to seeing many of you at our 25th Anniversary Conference and Trade Show in Frisco, Texas. If you haven't made plans to attend - it's not too late. There's still plenty of room for you and hotel accommodations are still available.

The Economy! Seems like that's on everyone's minds these days. We're worried about paying our mortgages, having healthcare, keeping our jobs and making our dollars stretch to handle all the expenses we have. One of our members recently made me feel a little better in regards to the expense incurred when you attend our trade show. He complimented the Association for having shows that were affordable and at affordable hotels. This member recently attended a conference in Rome and the room rates were over $500 per night...not surprising with the way the economy is at this time. The Association does work hard to secure contracts with hotels that are affordable and gives you as many added benefits as we can negotiate. This is YOUR Association and we continue to work hard to bring you member benefits that work for you, a trade show with ample time to network with your fellow NTPDA members and a chance to attend workshops and trainings. I hope to see many of you in January where we'll celebrate our 25th Annual Conference and Trade Show.

Speaking of busy days....Kim and I are experiencing very busy days....preparing for our 25th Annual Conference and Trade Show in Frisco, TX next January. We are excited to see many of you and hope some of you are still considering joining us. The NTPDA staff and board of directors have worked very hard to bring you another great show - so please make plans to attend.

I realize that when you write a blog for your company you do it to promote the company and to get your name "out there"....where ever "out there" may be. But, there are times that I feel like you should just write about some of the thoughts and feelings you are having. I was told that the blog is suppose to sound like "me"...and right now "me" feels like I need to mention that we have several members and their families that need our thoughts and prayers. Of course I'm not going to mention any names. It's just that I know that they would all appreciate being included in your thoughts and prayers. Just a good blanket prayer for our NTPDA friends and family - I think that would work. As one of my NTPDA friends said the other day..."once in awhile we all get a punch in the stomach"..and it wakes us up to what is happening around us...both in our private lives and in our country. And even though some of you may be going through some tough times these days, I read that if you can stay optimistic about these problems that your health, attitude and how you cope with your particular problem will improve.
I hope that you will think optimistically and be positive and have a great weekend.

I received a great letter from Elizabeth Gross, Customer Service, Steiner Tractor Parts, Inc. Elizabeth recently had some problems with SAIA...a freight company she was dealing with. Elizabeth states, "We should have exclusively used the NTPDA recommended carrier, Yellow Freight, but regretfully we sent several shipments with SAIA last spring." She detailed the trouble she had in the letter she wrote (to me and SAIA Claims Department) in the hopes that others would learn from her mistakes. I will be publishing the letter in the next issue of the Bulletin. Elizabeth was very honest in what happened to them and what can go wrong with LTL shipments. She also stated, "As the costs of fuel have increased, I'm sure that other members have gone rate-shopping also. It would be useful to have a blog where we can share our experiences about various carriers so that we can have the benefit of the experiences of the entire membership when making shipping decisions."
Again, the invitation is out there to any of you that want to share your freight experiences or anything else you feel would be useful to the entire membership.

"Let us never forget that government is ourselves and not an alien power over us. The ultimate rulers of our democracy are not a President and senators and congressmen and government officials, but the voters of this country." -- Franklin D. Roosevelt.
As everyone knows...it's an election year. So, whether you're a Republican or a Democrat please exercise your right to vote. It's your way of becoming involved and making a difference in the future of our country.
And...remember that you have that same right to vote at our upcoming conference and trade show in January. If you are interested in running for the board as either an NTPDA director or associate director...we'd love to hear from you.

Have we stopped listening these days? I just got a phone call and I answered the way I always do..."Good Afternoon, NTPDA, this is Phyllis." And, this woman, very sweetly said, "Is Max still there...this is Kathy." She said it like she was good friends with Max and maybe whoever was answering the phone. Then when I told her it was the wrong number (you would think that she realized she didn't recognize my voice)...she wanted to confirm the phone number. Then she started reciting the number - like maybe I was not telling her the truth and I was hiding Max from her...she realizes...oh, I do have the wrong number! Gheez! People don't seem to listen sometimes. I think we probably deal with that with our kids and maybe some of our employees. Or maybe it's what they call selective hearing. Some of you may experience that with your spouse (something Judy Chandler might know a little bit about)...but I digress! Just something to think about.
But, as you know we listen to our members and we work to bring good member benefits to you as well as ways that you can promote your business. Stay tuned for more information!

The dictionary defines the word networking as "the developing of contacts or exchanges of information." And, all of us do that on a day to day basis with our employees and our customers. The National Tractor Parts Dealer Association is a big proponent of networking. We encourage our members to join us at the annual conference and trade show and the summer conference and engage yourselves in networking. I recently attended the Used Parts Network Convention (UPN) in Bend, Oregon. I had never been to that area and it was absolutely beautiful. And, there were many networking opportunities at UPN. There are several NTPDA members that attend and it is also a great time to meet new people and potential new members. So, take every opportunity you can to network - there's a lot of great information floating around out there!

The NTPDA blog has several purposes. One of our main purposes is to get more information to more people about the National Tractor Parts Dealer Association. Our goal is to continue to promote our members and their businesses. Another reason for the blog is to get information to you our members. So...with the help of Glen Leaders we wanted to provide this information to you from the U. S. Department of Labor (DOL).
Some of the statutes and regulations enforced by the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) require that notices be provided to employees and/or posted in the workplace. DOL provides free electronic and printed copies of these required posters.
The elaws Poster Advisor can be used to determine which poster(s) employers are required to display at their place(s) of business. Posters, available in English and other languages, may be downloaded and printed directly from the Advisor.

In 1967, brothers Jerry and Gene Schaefer from Linn, Missouri, purchased Wilson Farm Supply from D. G. Wilson and established Schaefer’s Farm Supply. The company began with two employees and the owners. Dick Schaefer came into the group in 1977 and did the farming and some service-related work. Today the company employs 41 people.
Schaefer’s Farm Supply sold J. I. Case agricultural machinery, fertilizer and chemicals until 1977. In the next several years, changes in the farm economy created a stronger demand for used parts than for used machines. The company followed that trend and expanded into the construction and logging equipment used parts markets, as well.
As the need for used parts evolved, Schaefer’s Farm Supply became Schaefer Enterprises in 1986 and entered into the world of technology with parts sales nationwide expedited by satellite and data network systems.
Schaefer Enterprises, located in Wolf Lake, IL, is a charter member of the National Tractor Parts Dealer Association. Your Association for used, rebuilt and new agricultural and industrial repair parts.

Area Diesel Service, Inc. has been very supportive of the NTPDA for many years. They set up a booth at our trade show each January and we see them in February at the National Farm Machinery Show each year. I’ve come to know Von, Val and Dave over the past few years and think they are great people. So…let’s find out a little bit more about ADS.
On April 1, 2008 ADS celebrated 35 years in the diesel industry. And, it’s safe to say that time has brought change to ADS. An increase in size and numbers is obvious of the company’s growth, but not a lot has changed since ADS, Inc.’s first day in 1973. The company still maintains the core values it had as a start-up. A family-centered business keeping customer satisfaction its number one priority and hard work are still consistent.
For 35 years Val Leefers has worked hard to establish ADS, Inc. as one of the top diesel fuel system experts in the Midwest. Over the past 35 years it has expanded four times to make room for a pump department, turbo department, warehouse and state-of-the-art machine shop. And, in 1984, Area Diesel Service opened a second location outside of Des Moines, IA.
If you want to check out ADS, Inc. further please check out www.areadiesel.com. We’re glad that they are a part of the National Tractor Parts Dealer Association. Your association for used, rebuilt and new agricultural and industrial repair parts.

Don Turner's manufacturing business actually started out by accident. In 1977 he started buying older tractors & fixing them up to resell them. He had trouble finding parts for these tractors and decided he would start building them from the tractors he was selling. Other people noticed he was building the parts and started asking to buy the parts from him. He started out by building tractor fenders and now manufactures over 200 parts - all manufactured at Turner Welding & Farm Equipment. He sells parts for John Deere, Ford, IH-Case, Massey Ferguson and Compact Tractors. Their newest line of parts are for the Antique Allis Chalmers G which was originally manufactured in Gadsden, Alabama, which is Don and Diane's home town. If you'd like to visit with Don or Diane give them a call 256-492-4468. They are located in Hokes Bluff, Alabama!
The Turner's are great people and we always enjoy seeing them at our conference and trade show. They have something for everyone because Diane brings her handmade purses and they are very well received! I especially like my flamingo purse she gave me several years ago - go figure - me and a flamingo purse!
The Turner's are another example of the great folks we have as members of the National Tractor Parts Dealer Association. Remember that we are the association whose members offer you "Used, Rebuilt and New Agricultural and Industrial Repair Parts".

It looks like Stamm Equipment, in business for 30 years, owned and operated by John & Betty Stamm...is doing something right. Here is what one satisfied customer commented on- line about Stamm Equipment Company, Wayland, Michigan. They stated..."Acres of Stuff! Amazing selection of equipment and parts. Have bought several things there. Always helpful, competent, and reasonably priced." What more can I say - those are words you want to hear about you and your company.
Stamm Equipment has a large selection of new and used parts, a full service tire department, a radiator department and machine shop. They also sell new trailers and used farm machinery.
So...when in a jam...call Stamm...they'll be glad to help you. And we're glad to have them as long time members of the National Tractor Parts Dealer Association. Your Association for used, rebuilt and new agricultural and industrial repair parts!

The National Tractor Parts Dealer Association is an international association with members all across the United States, Canada and Australia. These members serve the agricultural and industrial industries for the purpose of buying and selling repair parts and related equipment via direct communication among the membership.
So now, we have all these members that have joined the Association...we're thrilled that they joined...now what do we do with them? We work to find ways that will help them run their businesses on a day to day basis. One of the ways we do that is to offer them member benefits...benefits that will help them save money and help their bottom line. One of those benefits is our freight program through Yellow Transportation. Yellow offers free cost-saving programs available to members of the Association. NTPDA members can receive a 62% discount on qualifying national and regional freight shipments, save up to 25% on small parcel express shipping, and savings of up to 50% on office product purchases. If you are interested in learning more Click here to email your association benefits coordinator or call 800-647-3061, Ext. 6549.

I started Caywood Tractor Company in June 1969 selling whole units of Case, CAT, Deere and other brands. I also experienced the coal boom in the mid-seventies. This was the most unreal selling experience of selling large dollar amounts of equipment to buyers who many times never visually inspected their purchase prior to delivery. The next boom we experienced was exporting Case Loader Backhoes to Malaysia, Indonesia and other points from 1976 to 1985. We have about 30 subcontractors that do various types of parts related work for us on a regular basis.
Our motto, "We like to treat people like we expect to be treated".
The NTPDA membership is so diversified and is of vital importance to our every day business of buying and selling construction and agricultural parts. There are 55 or 60 members that we do business with throughout the year. We have been doing business with one of these fine member companies, Schaefer Enterprises, for 33 years. (Schaefer is a model used, reconditioned and new replacement parts business that is a tough act to follow.)
As usual, we have a great group of NTPDA officers for 2008. I am sure we will have another banner year.
Special thanks to all the NTPDA members for their support.

Founded in the Spring of 1998, All States Ag Parts (ASAP) opened their first store in Salem, South Dakota on June 2nd of that year. ASAP Founder David Dyke had started Worthington Tractor Salvage in 1964, literally a one person operation; then sold the business 22 years, 7 stores and 135 employees later in 1986. After a hiatus from the tractor salvage business, Dave and sons Paul and John started the new company, opening Salem Tractor Parts in June of 1998, with one non-family employee – Ben Johnson, who still works at the Salem store.
Later that summer ASAP purchased Bridgeport Tractor Parts, located in the panhandle of Nebraska. Soon after in December of 1998, a three store chain of salvage yards (Smith Implement) was acquired, expanding ASAP into Wisconsin (Downing and Black Creek) and Iowa (Fort Atkinson).
In 2000, ASAP purchased Gilbertson Implement in Hendricks, Minnesota and opened store number six as Hendricks Tractor Parts on the Minnesota – South Dakota border.
The company continued to expand in October of 2005, with the purchase of Double D Tractor Parts in Sikeston, Missouri from David Eftink, renaming the store Missouri Tractor Parts. Then, in May of 2007, the business expanded into its first “non-salvage” location in the Des Moines, Iowa area, opening location number eight, Urbandale Tractor Parts, the web (www.tractorpartsasap.com) and catalog center for the organization.
Today the Company Headquarters is in Downing, Wisconsin. Store Operations, New Products Purchasing and Marketing Management functions are located in Urbandale, Iowa. John Dyke serves as President and CEO, Paul is still active as Vice President - Company Operations and David is retired (kind of) and splits time between Sioux Falls, SD and Apache Junction, AZ.

Well, TGIF! Hope this finds all of you well and getting ready for a great weekend. We have had some great weather in Texas this week. Last week we had about 6 inches of snow and this week we're in shorts and flip flops! That's what I love about living here.
The last few weeks I've been writing about some of our members...and I do want to continue that. I'll be blogging about All States Ag Parts next week. So, if you want me to write about your company just let me know. It's just another way to talk about the new, used and rebuilt tractor parts industry.
This week I want to mention a very special person. She's been involved with our Association for many years and has served on the board of directors for several years as well. I mention her because today is a very special day - she's turning 50! I've told her for the past few years that turning 50 is not all that bad. My mother always told me that getting older is much better than the alternative! Terri and her husband, Russ, always add so much to any meeting or event we have. They have a very caring nature and are so much fun to be around! So...let's wish Terri Stevens from The Tractor Barn a very happy 50th today and may she have many, many more. You can post a comment at the bottom of this blog if you want to leave Terri a Happy Birthday greeting. She's been a great friend to me and many of you so HAPPY BIRTHDAY, TERRI! Have a wonderful day.
I hope all of you have a great weekend!
Until next time....

The National Tractor Parts Dealer Association is committed to supporting our members and their companies. We want all of you to be successful and we are here to help you in any way we can. One way that we thought would be effective was to talk about our members in our blog on a weekly basis. We’ve already blogged about a few of you and this week it’s time to talk about Russells Tractor Parts in Scottsboro, Alabama.
Pat Russell opened the door to Russells Tractor Parts in October 1992 and he and his wife, Becky, became involved with the NTPDA that same year with Pat serving on the board for several years. Russells Tractor Parts is a tractor salvage yard that deals in new, used and industrial parts. Their primary focus is on parts locating. If you’re looking for that hard to find tractor part or just a tractor part in general, then give them a call at 800-248-8883. Pat continues to be involved in the Association but has branched out in the past few years. In 2000, Pat and his son-in-law Chris Staton started the B-B-Que Shop where they are dealers of Traeger grills. In December of 2003, Pat’s son, Trey, joined the family owned and operated business. And, this past January, Trey was elected to the NTPDA board of directors. It’s exciting to see generations continue to be involved in the family business. Over the past few years not only have the businesses grown but so has the Russell family. Chris and Bandy have a son, Stone, and Trey and Erica are expecting their first baby in April.
So many of our member companies are owned and operated by families and it’s great to see everyone working together to improve not only their businesses but working towards keeping the family together!

Hope this finds all of you well...especially those of you who attended the National Farm Machinery Show either as a displayer or an attendee. Pat Russell informed me that it is 27 (I think) acres of information under one roof! It's an amazing place...Kim can attest to that! She came in and helped me out in the booth Friday and Saturday. She decided to trek over to the West Wing and visit with some of our guys that have booths over there. When she returned she said she definitely didn't wear the right walking shoes! She'll bring her comfy shoes next year...for sure!
The National Tractor Parts Dealer Association attends the farm show to promote our members. We're not necessarily there to acquire new members but we usually get a few leads while we're there. We're mainly there to promote our Regular Members who sell used, rebuilt and new agricultural and industrial repair parts. As an association we feel that we are providing you the tool to promote your company on an equal playing field. We handed out almost 900 brochures promoting you and 1,000 calendars that promote our website - which in turn promotes you. We hope that in handing out this information to the end-user that you will see an increase in calls and hits on your website. We'd love to hear that you saw positive results from our time spent in Louisville.
Something very bizarre happened in Louisville in regards to our shipment...I'll blog about that later in the week. I know you can't wait!
Remember that the National Tractor Parts Dealer Association is your connection to used, rebuilt and new agricultural and industrial repair parts.

I hope you’re all having a good week. We’re really busy in the office these days – getting out the scholarship packets as well as preparing for the National Farm Machinery Show in Louisville next week. I look forward to seeing many of you there. In fact, the company I’m blogging about this week will be at the show as well. The Mulder brothers and their associates seem to be one of the busiest booths at the show. When I stop to visit with them I have to sneak in between all the customers they have waiting to ask questions or place an order.

If you’re not familiar with K & M Manufacturing this company, which began as K & M Manufacturing and Repair, was founded in 1958. Their first products were simple tool boxes and steps designed to make a farmer's work easier and more productive in the field. In the early 60´s K & M expanded the product line to include replacement tractor seats. From there, the product line has continued to grow to more than 750 innovative products like seats, suspensions, steps, mirrors, floor mats, cab foam kits, warning light systems, tool boxes, weight boxes and many more items. Their products are custom built for Allis Chalmers, Case IH, David Brown, Ford, International Harvester, John Deere, Kubota, Massey Ferguson, Minneapolis Moline, New Holland, Oliver White, Steiger and Versatile tractors and mowers.
If you’re planning to attend the National Farm Machinery Show in Louisville next week, stop by and visit them in the West Wing – Booth #767-773. And, be sure to meet Larry Mulder’s son, Nick, who will be taking over the Iowa territory for K&M!

As stated in information I sent to all of our members last week and in conversations I’ve had with several of you…here is my first Blog promoting our members. I’ve heard from several of you and I’m keeping your names on my white board. I’m doing these in order of who contacted me first, second, etc. I want to be fair to everyone. So each week I’ll spotlight one of our members. This is a great way for us to promote our members to the end user as well as get information out to everyone about the National Tractor Parts Dealer Association – your connection to “Used, Rebuilt and New Agricultural and Industrial Repair Parts”.
This week we are introducing Tractor & Equipment Company Used Parts located in Birmingham, Alabama. TEC is one of our newest members and I met Ronnie Ratliff (Branch Manager) and Sherry Ratliff (Sales Secretary) when they hosted UPN (Used Parts Network) several years ago. I’ve been trying to get them to join for several years and when they decided to become a customer of Allied Information Networks then it all came together and they joined. We’re glad to have them!
With the direction and imagination of a strong leadership and an enthusiastic crew, TEC is a vital force in the heavy equipment industry. TEC's main priority is to keep their customers up and running. Their Parts Department is committed to "keeping you moving." And with combined sales experience of over 40 years…they are a great source for your used heavy equipment needs. In fact, TEC has the largest inventory of used parts for construction machinery in Alabama. Parts from hundreds of dismantled machines have been cleaned, inspected, computerized and stored in their used parts warehouse. In most cases, their used parts cost less than half of the price of a new part. A lot of older machines are running economically today thanks to their huge used parts inventory.
Check out www.tecusedparts.com, where you can now access hundreds of available used parts quickly and easily and feel free to search their parts database for the used part you need.

Many of our members attended our 24th Annual Conference & Trade Show in Kansas City last week. All in all I feel it was a very successful meeting in many aspects. Our members were able to spend time together networking and sharing ideas about their respective businesses. We also heard some great speakers during our stay in KC. Mr. Richard Hawk enlightened us on safety in the workplace and stress management. Mr. Jim Jacobus brought us information on how to be the “best of the best”. Jim says, “Inside every human being a champion heart beats.” Mr. Michael Libbie talked to us about customer retention and then introduced us to Mr. Dan Duffy who brought us some very interesting information in regards to a new customer base that is really growing – the hobby farmer. If any of you want more information regarding these speakers, please let me know! And, if you have time - post a comment on the blog and let us know what you thought about the show!
Kim has put some pictures of our week in KC on the website. So…check out the Member Photos. As most of you know we are now working on our upcoming Summer Conference in Aurora, Ohio and our 25th Anniversary Conference & Trade Show in Frisco, Texas next January. Be sure and watch the Blog and your mail for more information about both of these opportunities.

Happy New Year! I'm sorry that I haven't blogged in a while but between the upcoming conference and trade show and the holidays...well, it's just been a bit hectic around here. We are tying up loose ends and getting ready to head to Kansas City in less than 2 weeks. Can't believe it's already that time again! We have over 200 attending this year so we're looking forward to a great time to network and socialize with our fellow members. I'm looking forward to seeing many of you there!
It seems that 2007 was a good year for the Association in terms of membership. We now have over 200 members and I haven't seen the numbers that high since I started working here ten years ago. And, to be more specific we acquired 22 new members in 2007 and only lost 9 - so that's very impressive. Thanks to the great leadership of the NTPDA Board of Directors we continue to grow and prosper within the Association.
If you've been thinking about joining the National Tractor Parts Dealer Association, maybe it's time to go ahead and take that next step...and also think about joining us in Kansas City....it's not too late. If you want to join an association that promotes the buying and selling of tractor parts and associated equipment via direct communication among members of the association - then this is the association for you to join. Drop us an email or give us a call if you would like additional information!
I wish you the best in 2008!
Until next time...

I've been thinking a lot lately about our Association and the fact that we are always looking for member BENEFITS...key word being "BENEFITS"...that will ultimately help our members save money, increase their bottom line, keep their employees safe and promote the new, used and rebuilt tractor parts industry...the list could go on and on.
But it has come to my attention over the past few weeks that maybe we should be looking at the MEMBER benefits...key word being "MEMBER". Maybe we should be thinking of ways to keep our members healthy and able to continue to work and promote their businesses. If we aren't healthy then what does it matter if you save money, increase your bottom line, keep your employees safe and promote the new, used and rebuilt tractor parts industry? Your first and foremost thought should be to make sure that you stay fit and able to work each day and work to your full potential. I have had several calls over the past two weeks about members who have had heart bypasses and believe me....they are getting ready to change their lifestyle. One member I talked to said that it was a real wake-up call and that he intends to do everything he can to make sure he is around for another 50 years. We are all burning the candle at both ends and eventually something has to change and hopefully it won't be because you've had a heart attack or stroke and you have no choice. Make the choice now to take care of yourself...eat right and exercise. I'm personally trying to do that and it's hard to make that commitment but when you think about it what is really 30 minutes out of your day? I'm sure that most of you (me included) watch 30 minutes of TV every day. Well, do what I try to do...watch that 30 minutes of TV while walking on the treadmill...it really isn't that hard.
I'd like to challenge all of you to reply back to me and let me know what you do to keep healthy and to make sure that you're around for another 50 years! I hope to be here that much longer...there's so much I want to do. Or maybe you have a suggestion as to how we can support one another and not only offer great member BENEFITS but great MEMBER benefits. I plan to blog more about keeping healthy, exercise and how to deal with stress in future articles and your thoughts and ideas would be greatly appreciated!
Speaking of "stress"....you won't want to miss the presentation by Richard Hawk who will talk to us on Thursday morning in Kansas City about safety in the workplace and on Thursday afternoon about stress and how to deal with it. So, if you haven't sent in your registration forms for the 24th Annual Conference & Trade Show in Kansas City please take care of that as soon as possible. We're going to have a great turnout in KC and a great conference and trade show.
Until next time...

Hope this finds all of you doing well and experienceing some cooler weather. Looks like I'm heading to a little cooler climate as I travel to Clevland today. As most of you know, we meet each July for a board meeting and next year we're going to be in Aurora, Ohio. So, I'm meeting with Ralph & Kathy Seymour and we're going to tour his town of Aurora and make plans for next year! Mark your calendars to join us next July 17-20, 2008 and become involved in our Summer Conference (new name...same great people) in Aurora with a fun day planned in Cleveland. Of course more information will be sent to you in the very near future.
We not only try to plan great opportunities for networking for all of our members but we also try to provide tools for you to use in your day to day businesses. Mr. Michael Libbie at Insight, Advertising, Marketing and Communications asked if I would add a link to our website to promote the radio show he's on - Highway 6 - Rural Lifestyle Radio and of course I said YES! The radio show is all about living the rural lifestyle. There are 40 million households that live on 3-100 acres of land which is a huge potential for all of you.
We are always interested in promoting a cause that can increase the potential for you as a dealer of used, rebuilt and new agricultural and industrial repair parts. If you know of other opportunites of the National Tractor Parts Dealer Association, please contact me. I always enjoy hearing from you.
Better get ready for Cleveland and get busy planning another great Summer Conference next July.
Until next time!

I don't know about all of you but we are experiencing some really hot weather here in Texas these days. We did get a bit of a reprieve this summer with all the rain we had but it's now catching up with us. We are having 100+ degree weather but guess that's the way it goes when you live here! Hope all of you are finding ways to stay cool this summer.
I was thinking the other day about the great members we have within this organization. Not just in terms of being members of the National Tractor Parts Dealer Association. So many of you support your fellow members by promoting the new, used and rebuilt tractor parts industry. And we sincerely thank you for your contributions. But, you do more than that...you support other causes and participate in different activities that you are passionate about. Sometimes I hear about them. Georgie Pease with Insight, Advertising, Marketing & Communications just biked 477 miles in 7 days! The name of the ride was RAGBRAI and she'll tell us more about it in the next issue of the Bulletin. How did she do that? I can barely do two miles on the treadmill every morning!! And Doris Eftink with Double D Supply Company is still working on her contribution to Locks of Love by growing her hair out and then donating it. As soon as it's grown 10 inches she can donate it and she will telling us all about it an upcoming issue of the Bulletin. Who else among our membership is donating their time, money and expertise to causes and activities that are important to them? We would love to hear from you.
We had a surprise visit from a member the other day...right after we got back into our building after all the flooding. Mr. Bill Boston, Territory Manager with Sparex stopped by to say hello. It was nice to have a visitor and show off our freshly painted and carpeted building. If you're ever in this area please take a few minutes to stop by and see us. And if it's around lunchtime we'll let you take us out!
Stay cool.
Until next time...

Well, it's been a long time since I've blogged and I've missed you! Hope you've missed me as well! We have had one heck of a time since our offices flooded on June 17th. We got back in our offices July 5th and then left early the next week for our summer board meeting in Breckenridge, Colorado. So, it's been a bit hectic to say the least.
Our summer board meeting was a huge success and we got a lot of work done as well as networking and socializing with our fellow board members. As you know the summer board meeting is open to all members and this year we were joined by Debbie Dusenbury of Speer Cushion and her dad, Wally! Also, joining us was Tom Salisbury with Jr.'s Construction Parts, Inc. and his son, Austin. The past few years our attendance has gone down for the summer board meeting and we're hoping to change that next year. The board made the decision to change the name from "Summer Board Meeting" to "Summer Conference" in the hopes that it will entice more members to attend. We will have plenty of time for a board meeting, a featured speaker, fun activities and networking and social time for all that attend. And, we have decided to hold the 2008 Summer Conference in Aurora, Ohio. So, watch the NTPDA website as well as the Bulletin and your mail for more information! And, give us your comments and let us know if you would be interested in attending our 2008 Summer Conference.
Remember, that our member network can supply you with new, used and replacement parts for all your tractor needs!

As you know, our numbers fluctuate year to year and we're happy to report that this is the highest count that we've had in quite a few years. What do we attribute this to...you might ask! Well, for one thing I think it's all the great things that our members say about us to their colleagues, friends, business associates and maybe even their families. Word of mouth and the advertising that we've been doing through our website and our blog has helped a great deal as well. At least, that's how I see it. Let's try to get 200 members by the end of the year! I think we can do it!
I hope this will encourage you all to mention us to anyone that you think might be interested in becoming a member. Remember that our Mission Statement says that we will promote the buying and selling of tractor parts and associated equipment via direct communication among members of the Association. The Association will promote social and business fellowship among the members and will assist each individual member in becoming a better asset to the community in which the member serves. It will constantly strive for the betterment of the tractor parts and associated equipment industry in every respect. And it will develop and maintain a quality of service oriented attitude that will lead the industry and create a sustainable competitive advantage for all members of the Association.
If you are not already a member, does this sound like an Association you are interested in becoming involved with? If so, give us a call at 877-668-0900 or email me at phyllis@ntpda.com
Until next time. . .

The NTPDA office has been busy during the month of May, and I know a lot of you have been as well. With May being the end of the school year for many of your children there are always a lot of assemblies, play dates, graduations, and field trips to attend. And, if you have a graduating Senior you're also visiting college campuses and trying to get your finances in order for college tuition. I've been there (and still am) and that can be a daunting undertaking. I'm sure you feel like there are not enough hours in the day to accomplish everything you need to do. The NTPDA hopes that they have been able to assist some of you with your financial obligations towards higher education for your child by awarding the NTPDA scholarships each year.
We are proud to award up to 35 scholarships each year to children (and some employees) of NTPDA members - both regular and associate. The names of these recipients for 2007 are posted on the NTPDA website for our members to view. Kim has been really busy getting all the letters out to the recipients so that they can be recognized at their different assemblies that take place at the end of the year. Congratulations to all the recipients and keep up the good work!
We have also designated May as Membership Month and a letter was sent out to a list of prospects in an attempt to have them join the Association. If you are reading this, and you're not a member, and you feel you meet the criteria for membership, please give the NTPDA office a call at 877-668-0900 or send us an email at phyllis@ntpda.com.
I'll probably be seeing some of you next month at the Used Parts Network (UPN) Convention in Billings, Montana. This is a great time for you to network with individuals that work in the used, rebuilt and new agricultural and industrial industry. If you would like more information on UPN, please visit www.upc2007.com. I look forward to seeing you there!
Until next time....

I'm not sure how you all feel...but personally for me...TGIF! I hope everyone's had a productive week. Kim and I had a good week and got several things accomplished.
One accomplishment was mailing out our Bulletin...NTPDA's quarterly publication. I hope you all enjoy this issue as it highlights our 23rd Annual Conference and Trade Show that was held in January in Panama City Beach, FL. The Bulletin is a way to continue to promote the used tractor parts industry and our members. Be sure and check out my article, the President's Pen and Greetings from Greasy Girl. Also, let me take this opportunity to thank all of our members that advertise in our Bulletin. Your continued support is greatly appreciated!
This week we also held our 2nd quarterly board meeting - but this one was a teleconference. The NTPDA board meets face to face twice a year - at our January meeting and again in the summer. In fact, we will be holding our Summer Board Meeting in July in Breckenridge, CO. Be sure and watch your mail next week for information regarding this and remember everyone is invited to join us!
One of the topics we discussed was to research the possibility of presenting a "webinar" to all of our members. This would be an on-line training that would touch on topics of interest to our members. Why don't you help us out? Give us a call or drop us an e-mail and let us know what subjects you are interested in. This would be another way to offer a member benefit to all of you and a way to bring educational opportunities to you and your employees without having to travel and take time away from work!
I hope you have a great weekend.
Until next time...

I hope everyone survived the cold Easter weekend. Terri Stevens at The Tractor Barn said she wore her Easter dress to church but it didn’t have a “spring feel” when you had to wear your winter coat over it! Hope this finds most of you experiencing warmer weather and getting ready for a great summer!
Sometimes it’s difficult to think of a subject to “Blog” about and to make sure that within the body of the Blog I mention the words tractor, used tractor parts, aftermarket parts. . .words that the computer “sees” and helps move the NTPDA up in the search engine if a customer or prospect was to Google “used tractor parts”. Wow, it looks like I managed to get all the words into this paragraph so guess I’ll sign off for now!
Seriously, I do have something to talk about. I know that in the tractor world there are all types of tractors 2010’s, 2030’s, 685’s, 885’s. . .the list goes on and on! But there’s another group of numbers I’d like to mention. And it’s the 30-20-10 Rule. Kim and I learned about this last week when we attended the Five Star Speakers Showcase. This is where we’re invited to listen to about 10 speakers throughout the day to see if there is someone that we are interested in to bring to you at our annual conference and trade show.
So, the 30-20-10 Rule is a suggestion that for 30 minutes each day we exercise, for 20 minutes each day we read and for 10 minutes each day we journal. Now, I’m good with the 30 minute rule and the 20 minute rule because that’s just part of my normal day. But, I don’t know about the journaling rule. . .that seems a bit harder for me. But, they say if you write down your thoughts and your “to do” list at the beginning of the day it helps you sort everything out and have a much more productive day. I know that 30 minutes of exercise each day helps me and I enjoy reading for 20 minutes (or more) each day so maybe I should try to journal for 10 minutes. That’s only one hour out of my day and I’m sure I waste that much time daily! Probably watching American Idol!!
The more that we can do to make ourselves better, less stressed and more productive in our day to day activities is a plus. All of our NTPDA members work hard to provide a service to their fellow members, their families and the community that they live in. Keep up the good work and continue to tell your colleagues and business associates about the great friends and relationships you have within this Association.
Until next time. . .

According to Webster's New World Dictionary a member is defined as: a distinct part of a whole; a person belonging to some group, society, etc. That describes our members but we are that and much more. We're not only business associates, we're also friends. Some of our members have been with us since the inception of the Association and have been friends since then and some even before. Membership is defined as: the state of being a member. And it seems like it's pretty easy to obtain membership within the Association. You must meet the criteria as set out in the By-laws and pay your dues. Not too difficult. After you've become a member you might decide to get involved on a different level. You might get elected to the board of directors, you might offer a service to our members, and you might even conduct a training session at our conference and trade show. We appreciate all of our members...no matter their level of involvement.
We would not be an association without all of you being involved collectively. Thank you for all you do for YOUR Association. We're always looking to increase our membership so if you know of a company that might be interested in joining please let us know. We would be glad to give them a call and see if we can answer any questions they might have and get a packet of information out to them.
And speaking of members and the friends we have within the Association you might want to give Steve Chandler, C & L Tractor Parts, a call and wish him a HAPPY BIRTHDAY! He says he's "32 and holding!" Whatever!

Happy Birthday Steve!
Until next time...

In my past Blogs I've talked about a number of different subjects. I introduced myself and Kim and I've told you a little bit about some of our members and what they do. But, I haven't told you a whole lot about the Association in general. So, I think I'll take a few minutes of your time and do that.
The National Tractor Parts Dealer Association (NTPDA) is an international association with members across the United States, Canada, United Kingdom and Australia. These members serve the agricultural and industrial industries for the purpose of buying and selling repair parts and related equipment via direct communication among the membership.
We are governed by 12 members who serve as the Board of Directors and a staff of two. Our board of directors are very well qualified and they continually seek to provide NTPDA members with the best service for their dollar value.
We have a criteria for membership. Check out our Membership Qualification page to see if you qualify as a member and read testimonials from existing members. If you do qualify as a member, please consider this my personal invitation to join and become part of a growing membership with existing programs that are in place and working.
We welcome your thoughts and comments. Or if you want to visit with us please give us a call or send us an email.
Until next time....

For those of you who live North of me. . .which is most of you. . .you may not know it or you may find it hard to believe but today is the first day of spring! Springtime is seen as a time of growth, renewal, of new life (both plant and animal) being born, and of the cycle of life once again starting. It is also used more generally as the start of better times or using it as an incentive to get your life, your home and your businesses in order!
I started my spring-cleaning this past weekend in my yard and my garage. I’m not sure how happy my garbage man was when he saw all the trash I had piled up out front. But I can tell you I feel good about what I accomplished and plan to continue until everything is cleaned up and I can enjoy my summer.
Are you thinking about doing a little spring-cleaning. . .in your life. . .your home. . .your business? Since this is a Business Blog I guess I should concentrate on talking about what you can do in your businesses to get them back in shape (if they’re not already)! I talked to Jared James at James Environmental Management, Inc. and asked if they had a suggestion as to what I could talk about in my Blog. It was suggested that I talk about – overstock on inventories.
Do you have multiples of the same part for hundreds of different machines in piles all over your yard? Maybe you haven’t sold that part in years and you might only sell one of those parts or two if you’re lucky in the next five to 10 years. Jared James with James Environmental states, “That volume poses an environmental issue of ‘reducing exposure’. Those parts less one or two (or even ten) are scrap metal plain and simple. Inventory control can help the environment but most of all it can help profits."
I hope your spring-cleaning is a huge success and you get a lot accomplished. So that you, too, can enjoy your summer.
Until next time...

Are any of you beginning your St. Patrick’s Day celebration a day early? I’ve been invited to a tailgate party after work with bar-b-que and of course green beer. And, yes, I’m wearing green today so I won’t get pinched! Tomorrow is the official day that people celebrate with parades, wearing green, and of course, drinking (more) beer. One reason St. Patrick's Day might have become so popular is that it takes place just a few days before the first day of spring. One might say it has become the first green of spring. It is celebrated worldwide by Irish people, and increasingly by many of non-Irish descent (usually in the US and Ireland), hence the phrase, "Everyone wants to be Irish on St. Patrick's Day."
So even if you aren’t Irish I’m sure you’ll find a way to celebrate the day with friends and family, relax and have some fun. Some of our NTPDA members may be having some type of celebration at work. . .an employee lunch or getting together after work. It’s always nice to find a way to celebrate a special day by including your employees to show them how much you appreciate them. I’m taking Kim to lunch today because I always want to make sure that she knows how much I appreciate what she does for me and for the Association. Do you make sure your employees know how much you appreciate them? A pat on the back now and then can make a huge difference in how they feel about themselves and the job that they do for you and your company.
If you’re doing something special today or tomorrow for St. Patrick’s Day, let me know. Just click on “comments” and let me know what’s going on! I hope all of you have a great weekend!
Until next time. . .

Eight FFA students in Commerce, Texas entered three projects in the Agriculture Mechanics Contest in February at the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo. Each project was unique and competed in one of two divisions - Tractor Restoration and Electrical Shop Project.
We appreciate it when NTPDA members support their Association. But when it branches out to include the community and to support education it's an added bonus. Thanks to Broke F Farm Supply for mentoring and offering their knowledge and expertise to students at Commerce High School and furnishing the parts and tractors for the projects.
Billy Fowler, Commerce Agriculture Science Teacher and son of Billy and Karen Fowler of Broke F Farm Supply, stated, "I am very proud of these guys for staying with their projects and having the desire and drive to start and finish a major task."
Three students competed in the 1945 and older Tractor Restoration Division with a 1939 Ford 9N and received a 3rd place ribbon. Two additional students competed in the 1946-1960 Tractor Restoration Division with a 1956 Ferguson F-40. They received a 2nd place award.
Overall the contest graded the teams on tractor ascetics, mechanical power train repair, sheet metal work and documentation of the restoration.
In addition to ribbons and trophies the Ag class was awarded approximately $1,200 worth of tools and prizes including a Lincoln Mig Welder.
This is just another way that members contribute to the used tractor parts industry - by being an asset to their Association as well as to their community. Thanks Billy, Karen and B.G. Fowler for helping to make this all come together.

The niece of a friend of mine recently got married. It was out in the country and I wondered if I would ever find the place. I followed the directions (which is not an easy task for me) and continued to drive down this country road. I made left turns and right turns...jogged here and there and finally rounded the corner and saw a big white tent so I knew I was in the right place. The wedding took place in her backyard and I was surprised to see how she decorated for her wedding. Just take a look at the picture. I guess I tell you all of this so that we can see how tractors affect our lives in ways that we probably would never think to look. Apparently, it is so important in their lives that they wanted it to be a part of their special day. As members of the Association we continue to take care of all of the people that need tractor parts and related equipment to keep their farms and businesses running. And when you buy from an NTPDA member you can be assured of the highest quality standards...a product of their membership.
For membership information or to simply ask us a question please give us a call or drop us an email.

It seems that I use that phrase a lot when I'm talking on the phone. I didn't realize how much I said it until one of our members called my attention to it. And...she's right...and when I'm talking to her I'm very aware that I say it but it's now become sort of a joke between us. She says whenever she hears someone say..."You know what?" she thinks about me. I take it as a compliment that she thinks about me and then I realize how nice it is to have her for a friend. And it's a friendship that's developed over the years as me being Executive Director of NTPDA and "she" is Terri Stevens, NTPDA Board Secretary and a great friend. She and her husband, Russ (here they are at our summer board meeting in Corpus Christi) are always fun to be around and are both an asset to the Association. Terri is also the owner/operator of The Tractor Barn in Brookline, MO. Yep, a woman owner/operator...not that common in this field but she is very knowledgeable and is always out there trying to improve her business and be the best she can be. I guess that's all any of us can do...try to be the best we can be. Whether that's selling used tractor parts, going to training to improve our skills or taking care of our ourselves and our families. I think that's what is so great about this Association...the friendships that we've developed over the years. And those friendships continue to develop and we look forward to the time we can spend together.
Be sure and check out the website periodically for information regarding upcoming network opportunities. And if you're interested in becoming a member send us an email or give us a call. We're always glad to hear from you.

In a previous Blog, I mentioned the National Farm Machinery Show in Louisville. We were there a few weeks ago promoting our member dealers and also visiting with several of our members that attend and display at this show. We also talked to farmers.aka."end users" about the value in buying used tractor parts or replacement tractor parts from our member dealers. It was a long week but very beneficial to our Association as well as our members. We thoroughly enjoy meeting new people and supporting our members that attend the show.
Here's a photo of our booth and our NTPDA President, Glen Leaders with Leaders Salvage and NTPDA Vice President, Steve Chandler with C & L Tractor Parts & Equipment. I’m not so sure it was a good idea leaving these two in charge! And here is another photo of some of our members that attended the dinner we host every Friday night during the farm show. The NTPDA is a very social group and we also take advantage of any time we have to get together.
I hope you’re enjoying reading our Blogs and please take time to subscribe to receive them or make a comment on the subject matter. And you’re always welcome to give us a call or email us.

Do any of you watch American Idol? Well, I’m actually totally hooked on the show. And when Simon Cowell says “If I were to be perfectly honest.” The contestant hears those words and they immediately think uh – oh. So…here goes….if I were to be perfectly honest...I would tell you that never in a million years did I think I would ever be a “blogger”. Is that word in the dictionary yet?…if it’s not…it will be! The word was derived from “web logger”…and that’s exactly what we’re doing. We’re logging our thoughts and information through the web.
And, I have only one person to thank (well, I guess I’m going to thank him) for getting me started in blogging…Michael Libbie my marketing guru with Insight, Advertising, Marketing and Communications. He is a “mad dog” when it comes to blogging…just check out his site. And now he expects me to be a “mad dog” as well. Well, I can’t promise I’ll be as nuts…I mean as dedicated to blogging as he is but I’m certainly going to give it my best shot. What better way to communicate than with the written word. It’s a way to express ourselves and to actually do it in our own words and with our own style. And in the process I get to promote the used parts industry, the aftermarket industry, the replacement parts industry and all of our wonderful members!
Stay with us and we’ll bring you much more information!

Good morning…it’s a special day today…my first blog on the National Tractor Parts Dealer Association website. We’re based in Gainesville, Texas – 60 miles north of Dallas and just a few miles from the Oklahoma border. My name is Phyllis and I’ve been the Executive Director of NTPDA for about nine years. Also, working in the office is Kim, Administrative Assistant, and someone I could not get along without. We make a great team! It’s nice to meet all of you and hope you’ll visit often!
So…you may be wondering what we do and why? That was a question that was posed to me yesterday when UPS delivered my freight from the National Farm Machinery Show in Louisville. The UPS guy asked what kind of show had I been to….”a fashion show?”….I guess I was looking exceptionally good that day!…and I told him no…I had been to a farm show where I was promoting our member dealers. He was still curious so I told him that our member dealers sell used tractor parts, replacement tractor parts, combine/agricultural parts and heavy equipment to farmer, builders, acreage owners, hobby farmers, construction companies and people who restore antique farm equipment! He was impressed…I think he went out and bought a tractor!
We hope that you are impressed and you will continue to check out our website and our blog on a regular basis. Thanks for reading and we’ll visit again very soon. If Kim or I can help answer a question or point you in the right direction….call us or drop us an e-mail at ntpda@ntpda.com.

Every January the National Tractor Parts Dealer Association holds their annual conference and trade show. This past January it was held in Panama City Beach at the Bay Point Marriott. It was well attended and according to the surveys we received everyone had a great time. We are a very social group and we always enjoy networking with one another and talking about used tractor parts, replacement parts and how to promote our member dealers! We function in a very relaxed atmosphere and a lot of business is conducted during the trade show and even "after hours". Everyone has a chance to catch up with business associates and friends that they don't get to see on a regular basis. Our show is considered a "closed show" so you must be a member dealer or a potential member dealer to attend. If you think you might be interested in membership information just give us a call!
One of the surveys the NTPDA received was from Jerry Schaefer, Schaefer Enterprises. Jerry (THE Rock Star) stated, "The purpose of the NTPDA convention is to provide value to its attendees. I think the speakers, trade show and member interaction accomplished this." Thanks, Jerry...we like to hear good things about what we do! Sharon, his "better-half" stated, "The Panama City Beach convention had it all - information, training, trade show and good healthy humor. Great times was had by all of our group."
Keep those good thoughts and messages coming in. We strive to meet the needs of all of our association members. We would love to hear from any of you so feel free to give us a call or send us an email!
